CoDA Morning Work Today

I feel:

blessed, sensual, hopeful, willing, safe, thankful, sacred, serene, renewed, welcoming, peaceful, gleeful, better, vibrant, amorous, grateful, valuable, trusting, open, healthy, gifted, alive, recharged, loving of people and animals and plants and minerals and the world in general.

powerless

shy, not whole, insecure, estranged, uncertain, exhausted. Need sleep! Need more sleep! Must put self first!

Wow. Sometimes is surprising when go through all the magnets to see which ones "fit."
First stuff: happy about b'day, and L, and being a woman, and finding myself
Second stuff: food - and glad to know am powerless on own
Third stuff: shy because meeting L's friends tomorrow, one of whom is his best friend and former lover! Uncertain and shy about ability to socialize, especially when so tired.

5 good things about me
I am smart
I am hard-working
I am cute
I am able to relax and be carefree
I am able to help others feel that way too

Readings

For Today:

"Ther real fault is to have faults and not to amend them." Confucius

"Anger, resentment, jealousy, envy, and Bil W. states in the Big Book, 'are dubious luxuries of normal men.' For me, a compulsive overeater, they are poison. with defects unattended, the insanity of compulsive overeating returns and that is death, spiritually and emotionally if not physically. Have I been careless with my program? do i get into ego-driven arguments? do I sulk in silent scorn? Am i quick to criticize with a biting tongue/ These are dangerous traps. They can destroy my ability to think or act with purpose.
I know that change is possible, that I do not have to live with these crippling defects. i ha e steps to follow, and they lead to freedom.

For today: I am ready to change - to be rid of the faults that are hampering my recovery."

--

Voices of Recovery:

"Recovery is the result of living the Overeaters Anonymous Twelve-Step program." A commitment to Abstinence, p. 1

"Abstinence, to me, is very simple. It is refraining from compulsive overeating and continuing to work my program. Compulsive overeating is when i wander around my kitchen shoveling food into my mouth unthinkingly. Compulsiveness is wen i am not reading, writing, calling, and using the other tools. Compulsiveness is when i do not use the Steps or talk to my higher Power.
Abstinence is eating balanced meals, using the OA tools, practicing the Steps and Traditions, sponsoring and doing other service. i can binge on veggies, so I do not have a food list that determines my abstinence. instead, it is an action that undermines my abstinence: eating compulsively - feeding feelings, bingeing, stuffing my face. recovery is three-fold - physical, spiritual, and emotional. If I only count the physical (adhering to a food plan), I miss out on two important parts of recovery.

--

In This Moment:

"In This Moment, I choose to take care of myself.

When I feel out of control and my stomach is tied in knots, I stop, breathe, and remember that I have many tools to handle any situation. i remind myself that I am capable of taking care of me. I make good, smart decisions about my life. i trust that my Higher Power always provided guidance and direction, help and safety, love and joy. I just need to become quiet to get in touch with that strength. I know it is present in my life."

The Language of Letting Go

"We cannot simultaneously set a boundary and take care of another person's feelings. It's impossible; the two acts contradict.
What a tremendous asset to have compassion for others! How difficult that same quality can make it to set boundaries!
It's good to care bout other people and their feelings; it's essential to care about ourselves too. Sometimes, to take god care of ourselves, we need to make a choice.
Some of us live with a deeply ingrained message from our family, or from church, about NEVER hurting other people's feelings. We can replace that message with a new one, one that says it's not okay to hurt ourselves. Sometimes, when we take care of ourselves, others will react with hurt feelings.
That's okay. We will learn, grow, and benefit by the experience; they will too. The most powerful and positive impact we can have on other people is accomplished by taking responsibility for ourselves, and allowing others to be responsible for themselves.
Caring works. Caretaking doesn't. We can learn to walk the line between the two.

Today, I will set the limits I need to set. I will let go of my need to take care of other people's feelings and instead take care of my own. I will give myself permission to take care of myself, knowing it's the best thing I can do for myself and others."

I am a child of God.
I am good enough.
I am lovable.
I am loved.
I am enough.
I am grateful.
I am happy.

CoDA

I feel:

Above all else:

Relieved
Dr. said I've got the L thing in perspective.
I know I will get through the conferences.
I am eating better and losing weight.
Relieved.
Relieved and very, very grateful!

5 good things about me.
I am open-minded
I am cute
I am funny
I am smart enough
I work hard

Readings

For Today:

"Silence is the perfectest herald of joy: I were but little happy if I could say how much." William Shakespeare

Wow. How brilliant.

"There are many in OA who are known to be working a good spiritual program, maintaining abstinence and normal weight - and who are neither on the 'speaker circuit' nor among those who always volunteer to pitch at meetings.
Their silence does not disparage in any way the sharing of their more articulate fellow members. it is simply a fact, one which enlightens us with the understanding that we can be 'happy, joyous and free' and communicate that condition not through words but in that unmistakable glow found in the beautiful faces of recovering compulsive overeaters.
What we ARE does indeed speak louder than what we say.

For today: It is not necessary to describe my happiness; it is enough to feel it. My family, friends and fellow OAs will know it from what i do and say in going about the everyday business of living.

Voices of Recovery

"We complete our amends for our wrongful actions of the past by changing our actions in the future." OA 12 & 12 p. 78

"Though it can be humbling to apologize for something I've done wrong, it's easy to feel remorse when the pain of a recent mistake is still with me. The test of my commitment to the ninth Step is if I continue to improve my behavior after the initial feelings of regret have passed.
To amend something means to alter it. To be free of the wreckage of my past, I have to do more than just say I'm sorry when i harm another person. I have to change my behavior. This can be hard and sometimes even disconcerting, particularly when my old behavior patterns and beliefs are stronger than I thought. But continuing to work the Steps moves me through the difficult spots to new experiences of freedom and joy.
The fruits of recovery are great motivators to change, but alongside the hope of a brighter future is the equally powerful consequence of not changing - compulsive eating. if i don't change my thoughts and actions to reduce the harm I do in the future, I will overeat. Fro me, to overeat is to die.
A life well-lived requires that i continue to change, grow and clean up the wreckage of my past - and my present. If I do that, my life is better than I could have ever imagined. I thank my Higher Power for OA!

--

In This Moment

"In This Moment, I learn the most important thing.

I am grateful for my life today. When I came into recovery, i was newly separated. i was desperate to find someone who could give my life purpose - someone I could take care of, my soul mate. I heard at meetings that recovery meant learning how to take care of me, how to love myself. I didn't have a clue. I never learned that concept. Through working my program, I learned the most important lesson: 'I am all I need.' Today, I can say, 'I like me. I really like me!'

The Language of Letting Go:

"Surrender

"Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him." Step Three of Al-Anon

"Surrendering to a Power greater than ourselves is how we become empowered.
We become empowered in a new, better, more effective way than we believed possible.
Doors open. Windows open. Possibilities occur. our energy becomes channeled, at last, in areas and ways that work for us. We become in tune with the Plan for our life and our place in the Universe.
And there is a Plan and Place for us. We shall see that. We shall know that. The Universe will open up and make a special place for us, with all that we need provided.
It will be good. Understand that it is good, now.
Learning to own our power will come, if we are open to it. We do not need to stop at powerlessness and helplessness. That is a temporARY PLACE WHERE WE RE-EVALUATE WHERE WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO HAVE POWER WHEN WE HAVE NONE.
ONCE WE SURRENDER, IT IS TIME TO BECOME EMPOWERED.
LET THE POWER COME, NATURALLY. IT IS THERE. IT IS OURS.

TODAY, I WILL BE OPEN TO UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT MEANS TO OWN my power. I will accept powerlessness where I have no power; I will also accept the power that is mine to receive.

--

Caps are by accident - no time to fix
But oh! I feel so much better now. Than ever. Step three has finally, really, fully set in!

God, I offer myself to Thee. To build with me, and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do They will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help, of Thy power, Thy love, and Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always. Amen.

Grats

I am grateful:

1. My doctor yesterday.
2. He has helped me so much.
3. For so long.
4. Has been devoted to my well-being. I am so grateful for him.
5. My mother’s okay for today. And I’m taking her for a milkshake later.
6. Birthday coming Saturday.
7. I know I’ll get a present from M and D!
8. And maybe a card or two from others!
9. And L is taking me to dinner!
10. I hope to have a whole selfish weekend.
11. Conferences start today. I hate them. I’m very shy, and 20 minutes (or more) with each and every parent, twice a year is SO hard for me. But I am truly grateful. Grateful that I’ve gotten through them every time until now.
12. Grateful that I’ll probably get through them now too.
13. And grateful that I have the physical capacities.
14. That I have the physical capacity to walk.
15. To shower.
16. To dress.
17. To drive.
18. To speak.
19. To hear.
20. To understand.
21. And the psychological capacity to really listen.
22. And the open-mindedness to change as needed (not to a parent’s “command,” but as I learn more about the child…)
23. And empathy. I so deeply remember who/how I was in second grade. Am aware that they are not me. But can relate to much of what many (all, at least sometimes) go through.
24. That L seems to me to be a great teacher. Both of us seem to really get it. That if learning doesn’t take place, there is no teaching.
25. Elegance. Everywhere I find it.
26. Kindness. Everywhere I find it.
27. S, the teacher who said on the video, to 5th graders before they left us for the Middle School, “Be nice to each other.” That’s what he cared about most.
28. And that I still remember it. And I even say it to my little ones sometimes. Like when we’re breaking into groups for math or something: “Be nice to each other.”
29. Meditation.
30. Cats
31. Slightly sweet red wine. Maybe in a week or two I’ll have some more at home.
32. And I’m grateful that I don’t have, and never have had, a drinking problem.
33. The Five Mindfulness Trainings.
34. That as of this birthday, Saturday, it will be the first birthday I’ve ever had, independently. Not dependent on any man. Not desperate for one. No miserable without one.
35. Just me.
36. With lots of friends
37. And love
38. And hope
39. And interests
40. And happiness even.
41. And most of all, a desire to live!
42. And an appreciation of many of life’s wonders. (I have a feeling there are even more).
43. I had what I thought was a close friendship with a teacher, Li, for years. As it turned out, our definitions of friendship differed greatly. We had a falling out, and that was that. We still work well together, as we are both truly professionals, but have not been “friends” for years. Yesterday, in talking about something having to do with a project our classes are doing together, something came up and I realized she couldn’t possibly know about me and J. Now she has been here many times, been out with us many times,…I probably never spoke with her without mentioning him! She fully knew how I adored him and how close we were. So when I realized she didn’t know, I told her. She, who is known for being, um, cold, looked shocked and horrified.
44. Which told me gossip is not taking place all around the building about me. As it did for so long about everything! So I’m grateful that the building has changed.
45. And she said, “I don’t know how you’re even functioning.” Which told me she knew how big this was to me.
46. And she – known for being cold – spontaneously threw her arms around me and held me. (We were in the hall – no kids around). That meant a lot to me.
47. Later she wrote, and said, “If you ever want to talk.”
48. I’m grateful for my iPhone. I love it!
49. And that L, who swears he hates texts, has texting me about a million times lol.
50. I’m enjoying texting.
51. And I’ve taken pictures of my kids with it.
52. I’ll be in London within the month!
53. Giving a lotus to others (bowing with hands in sort of a prayer position but open in palms).
54. Ability to give Reiki energy to self.
55. And others (with permission, or in the case of a child, with parent’s permission).
56. And general others without permission (ex. after a tornado or something like that).
57. And non-human animals. Yes, doggy has received: )
58. And plants.
59. And minerals.
60. Humor
61. Sleep. I need a LOT more of it. And I’m grateful for the sleep I get.
62. L reminding me to tell students about the sky tonight.
63. That I just e-mailed the parents about it, with a link with beautiful pictures and great instructions
64. The internet
65. My little doggie. Well, I think she’ll really be J’s little doggie now. And I’m *fine * with that. I have some say in it, in fact.
66. Enough money to make it. For today. (May it continue).
67. Vegan foods.
68. Access to plenty of fresh, clean water.
69. I’m going to read le Petit Prince with my teacher! Yay! I mean, read it in high school, but didn’t really “get” it. Saw movie – disliked it. But now, will be able to read it with understanding!
70. L just wrote. He is fine fine fine following a “proper pace,” if you know what I mean. Yay. No pressures. Just enjoyment.
71. My dr. reminded me yesterday to enjoy!
72. AND – not to lose myself into anyone.

81. My deep desire for, and taking proper actions toward, eating better.
82. And leaving the rest in God’s hands.
83. Pretty undies.
84. Lacy stockings and ankly type socks
85. That they get noticed : )
86. I am a woman. I feel like a woman.
87. Washing out the container M brought with lunch in it for me yesterday
88. That she did bring me lunch yesterday
